TAN NEVER BURN
SUNLIGHT, VITAMIN D3 & SKIN CANCER
RETURN OF RA, SOL INVICTUS, OR ANY OTHER SUN GOD
I decided in my infinite non-wisdom, that I should stop talking about pharmaceuticals for a while and discuss something relevant to the here and now, (not that pharmaceuticals are not relevant to the here and now actually). That my friends would be summer, suntans, sunburns, sunscreens, malignant melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma and all that fun stuff. With that in mind I want to let you in on a little secret: the sun avoidance policy that your dermatologist, your internist, your hairdresser, your lawn care dude, your pizza delivery ape and even Cosmo tells all informs you of, is dead wrong with an emphasis on the dead-and that means you dying from an aggressive organ cancer or malignant melanoma. What?? Read on please…..
One of the biggest health advice blowbacks I have ever seen over the last 2 decades is the massive increase in sickness and disease from the absolute fear of the sun the medical community has instilled in us. Where else could you ever find such a ridiculous notion except from the medical elites? Especially the dermatologists whose sole function it seems is to prevent anyone from going into the sun “unprotected,” as if going outside we were approaching ground zero at some leaking biohazards lab. At the same time, and predictably, dermatologists appear to be completely ignorant of the harmful effects caused by constantly slobbering sunscreen all over your body. Many of the active sunscreen chemicals are proven carcinogens, some are suspect because of how they act when exposed to sunlight and others are potent gender bending endocrine disruptors. Some may even be directly toxic to the leydig cells of the testes. Being told to avoid the sun is astonishingly terrible advice and it’s counterintuitive as well. At least it’s counterintuitive to anyone interested in clean, healthy, natural living which immediately eliminates all medical elitists since most of them are physically as well as mentally ill.
As a species we evolved in potent equatorial sunlight.
Did you catch that? Need I repeat it?
As a species we evolved in potent equatorial sunlight.
Sunshine is a natural, direct, fundamental force in almost all life forms and it indirectly powers those that do not harness the suns energy directly. It drives the planet and allows for us to exist by pushing non-linear thermodynamical systems (that would be us, our physical chemistry) far and away from equilibrium. That’s where life exists-as far away from equilibrium as we can get-which requires lots of energy from the sun. Yet the dermatologist shuns it like the frumious bandersnatch. That shouldn’t be a surprise since nearly everything in community medicine is pill and procedure driven, anti-natural, counter-intuitive and ass-backwards with wellness being the last consideration.
Excuse me sir but we were told from our doctor, Red Book, the school nurse, the cashier at Costco, a Hometown Hottie from the August issue of Maxim, the toilet attendant at the Four Seasons and even the president of the Elk’s Club to avoid the sun’s damaging rays with a good quality sunblocker of at least an SPF of 50. So what’s wrong with sunscreen’s he bellowed with gobbets of turkey sandwich flying?
Well Billy, do you have a few minutes? Go grab my calabash and the cherry Cavendish Borkum Riff and I’ll tell you a tale. (A tiny banjo plinks, taking five minutes to light and bathe in the sedative Virginian haze while sipping an elderly cognac)…Billy, there appears to be several problems with the chemical types of sunscreens. The mineral types are far safer provided you do not use the nano variety. Nano particles have not been studied well enough to be guaranteed safe.
Nano materials are so small that once they are absorbed through the skin they can freely pass through cell walls and into cell organelles (the little organs of cells). We have no idea what years of dumping zinc nano-particles into our organelles will do so it’s best to avoid nano anything even though it sounds cool. Just tell everyone you’re really into nano everything while secretly avoiding it and pretending to be talking on your cell phone with the power off.
Before I get started you should know that in spite of all the hype and the advertizing and the insistence of your doctor to wear sunscreen to the point where every Caucasian looks as white, (almost blue) as an alabaster bed sheet on a blistering day and although sunscreens prevent sunburn… epidemiological or laboratory evidence that they prevent melanoma in humans is still missing.
Furthermore, evidence is mounting that they may cause melanoma and that they do not prevent squamous cell skin cancer either. First let’s examine these chemicals in more detail.
Chemical Sunscreens Have Three Primary Defects:
1. They are powerful free radical generators.
Their free radical generation increases cellular damage and changes that lead to cancer like DNA breakage.
2. They often have strong estrogenic activity.
Estrogenic – “Gender Bending” – chemicals interfere with normal sexual development and engendering a host of secondary medical problems.
3. They are synthetic chemicals that are alien to the human body and accumulate in body fat stores.
The human body is well adapted to de-toxify biologicals that it has been exposed to over tens of millions of years. But it often has difficulty removing new and non-biological compounds such as DDT, Dioxin, PCBs, and chemical sunscreens.
Chemical Sunscreens Include:
- Benzophenones (dixoybenzone, oxybenzone)
- PABA and PABA esters (ethyl dihydroxy propyl PAB, glyceryl PABA, p-aminobenzoic acid, padimate-O or octyl dimethyl PABA)
- Cinnamates (cinoxate, ethylhexyl p-methoxycinnamate, octocrylene, octyl methoxycinnamate)
- Salicylates (ethylhexyl salicylate, homosalate, octyl salicylate)
- Digalloyl trioleate
- Menthyl anthranilate
- Avobenzone [butyl-methyoxydibenzoylmethane; Parsol 1789]
POWERFUL FREE RADICAL GENERATORS EASILY ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN
Benzophenone (and similar compounds) is one of the most powerful free radical generators known. It is used in industrial processes as a free radical generator to initiate chemical reactions. Benzophenone is activated by ultraviolet light energy that breaks benzophenone’s double bond to produce two free radical sites.
The free radicals then react with other molecules and produce damage to the fats, proteins, and DNA of the cells – the types of damage that produce skin aging and the development of cancer.
Adding to the problem is that large amounts of applied sunscreens can enter the bloodstream though your skin.
In the 1970s, Prof. Howard Maibach warned that up to 35 percent of sunscreen applied to the skin can pass through the skin and enter the bloodstream but this had little effect on sunscreen promotion or safety testing.
The longer sunscreen chemicals are left on the skin, the greater the absorption into the body. This may be a factor in the large increases in cancer (breast, uterine, colon, prostate) observed in regions, such as Northern Australia, where the use of sunscreen chemicals has been heavily promoted by medical groups and the local governments.
In spite of the fact that the dermatology driven skin care industry claims that the judicious use of sunscreens reduces ones risk of skin cancer there has never been adequate long term safety testing of these chemicals.
On the other hand, over the past decade, many scientists studying cancer have come to virtually the opposite conclusion; that is, the use of sunscreen chemicals may be increasing the incidence of cancer and that sunlight exposure may actually decrease human cancer rates and improve your health.
It now appears that many heavily-used chemical sunscreens may actually increase cancers by virtue of their free radical generating properties. Dr. Gordon Ainsleigh in California believes that the use of sunscreens causes more cancer deaths than it prevents.
He estimates that the 17% increase in breast cancer observed between 1991 and 1992 may be the result of the pervasive use of sunscreens over the past decade.
It appears that sunscreens become dangerous only if they can penetrate the epidermis into living tissue. If this occurs the DNA damage can be amplified many times, causing damage to living tissue even at very low concentrations such as 10 micromoles/liter.
Many of the above mentioned chemicals have been shown to easily penetrate skin into deeper layers. Chemicals such as: ethoxylated ethyl-4-aminobenzoate (PEG-25 PABA), benzophenone, benzophenon-3 (oxybenzon), salicylic compounds, octocrylene, octylmethoxycinnamate.
Some ingredients in sunscreens protect only against direct DNA damage, but increase indirect DNA damage [3 references in original]. It is assumed that this causes an increase in melanoma cases found repeatedly in sunscreen users compared to non-users [4 references in original].
Apparently there is no free lunch and even the inorganic metal oxides of titanium and zinc can generate free radicals and harmful reactive oxygen species.
Dr Pickart lists other harmful chemicals used as sunblocks and points out the particular hazards with each. I will refer you to his website for a more complete study of these dangerous substances. It is: www.reverseskinaging.com. Suffice it to say that there exists some real problems from the use of these substances.
